Credit decision first, collateral structure second
The right order is Customer → Risk Assessment → Credit Allocation Limit → Collateral Requirement. High collateral does not automatically make excessive credit healthy.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Collateral is no substitute for sound credit assessment. It is a protection and discipline mechanism that makes a properly assessed risk safer and more manageable.
The right order is Customer → Risk Assessment → Credit Allocation Limit → Collateral Requirement. High collateral does not automatically make excessive credit healthy.
Legal validity, up-to-date valuation, liquidity, convertibility into cash and real capacity to cover risk are assessed. Bank letters of guarantee, mortgages, sureties, pledges over movable assets, direct debit systems (DBS), credit insurance and similar instruments offer different kinds of protection.
The aim is not to take the highest collateral from everyone, but to carry the right risk with the right customer under the right security structure.
Well-structured collateral does not only protect at the moment of loss; it can also strengthen the customer’s financial responsibility and payment discipline.
As customer risk, trading volume and collateral value change, adequacy and validity are monitored again. Taking collateral and managing it are not the same thing.
Collateral creates confidence, but it does not replace credit capacity. The decision to take risk rests on customer capacity; the decision on protection rests on the collateral structure.
WITH ALMERA
Collateral is not just a safeguard that matters once risk materialises; it is a management tool that can strengthen financial discipline beforehand.
Collateral is the seatbelt of risk management, not a reason to drive faster and without control.
